# Set up Conduktor Agents

> Enable Conduktor Agents in Console and connect a model provider with the models configuration or CDK_MODELS environment variables.

Agents need two things from your Console configuration: the feature has to be enabled, and Console needs at least one model connection to run tasks with. Both are deployment settings, so you set them where you configure Console, in the YAML configuration file or as environment variables, and restart Console.

## Prerequisites

| Requirement | Details |
| - | - |
| **Console 1.48.0 or later** | Agents ship with Console 1.48.0. |
| **An Anthropic API key** | Anthropic is the supported model provider in this release. Console calls the Anthropic Messages API directly. The key only has to be able to call the model you choose. |
| **Network access to the provider** | Console has to reach `https://api.anthropic.com`, or the base URL you configure, from where it runs. |
| **A Console administrator** | Only administrators can set up and use agents in this release. |

> [!TIP]
>
> Support for OpenAI and Amazon Bedrock is coming in our next release later in November

## Enable the feature

Set `enable_agents` to `true`. It's `false` by default, which hides the agents UI and API for everyone.

> [tab] YAML
>
> ```yaml theme={null}
> enable_agents: true
> ```

> [tab] Environment variable
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> CDK_ENABLE_AGENTS=true
> ```

## Connect a model

A model connection tells Console which provider to call, with which key and which model. Add one or more under `models`. Each needs an `id` and an `api_key`; everything else has a default.

> [tab] YAML
>
> ```yaml theme={null}
> models:
>   - id: anthropic
>     name: Anthropic
>     api_key: ${ANTHROPIC_API_KEY}
>     default_model: claude-opus-5
> ```

> [tab] Environment variables
>
> ```bash theme={null}
> CDK_MODELS_0_ID=anthropic
> CDK_MODELS_0_NAME=Anthropic
> CDK_MODELS_0_APIKEY=sk-ant-...
> CDK_MODELS_0_DEFAULTMODEL=claude-opus-5
> ```
>
> To read the key from a mounted secret file instead, set `CDK_MODELS_0_APIKEY_FILE` to the file path. For a second connection, repeat the variables with `_1_`.

| Property | Description | Default |
| - | - | - |
| `id` | Identifier of the connection. Agents reference it, so keep it stable. | Required |
| `name` | Display name shown in the model picker when you create an agent. | Same as `id` |
| `provider` | Model provider. | `anthropic` |
| `base_url` | API base URL. Change it to route calls through a proxy or gateway. | `https://api.anthropic.com` |
| `api_key` | API key for the provider. Treat it as a secret. | Required |
| `default_model` | Model that agents on this connection run with. | `claude-opus-5` |
| `max_tokens` | Token budget for a whole agent run, across every model call it makes. A run that reaches it stops and fails. | `500000` |
| `request_max_tokens` | Maximum output tokens for each model call. | `16384`, or `max_tokens` if lower |
| `request_timeout_seconds` | How long Console waits for each model call. | `300` |

Connections are read-only in Console. The **Models** page and the model picker list them by name, and never show the key. To change a connection, update the configuration and restart Console.

> [!TIP]
>
> Add a second connection with a smaller model, such as `claude-haiku-4-5`, for frequent or lightweight tasks. Pick the connection per agent.

## Check the setup

Restart Console and sign in as an administrator. Use the toggle at the top of the sidebar to switch from **Console** to **Agentic**: the agents home page opens. If the toggle isn't there, `enable_agents` isn't set on the running instance.

Then go to **Models**. It lists your connections by name, provider and model, without the key. If a connection is missing, Console didn't load that part of the `models` configuration: check the Console logs for a configuration error, such as a missing `api_key` or a duplicate `id`.

You're ready to [create and run your first agent](https://docs.conduktor.io/guide/conduktor-in-production/automate/agents/get-started.md).
